HOLLYWOOD PARK POLICE DEPARTMENT

ANNOUNCES FIRST CITIZEN POLICE ACADEMY

by Chief Ballard

Police officers are often asked why they do what they do the way they do it.  To this end, we, the members of the police department, are offering you, the citizens we serve, a look at the department and its personnel that you have never before seen -- up close and personal.  And, we’ll accomplish this through the first Hollywood Park Citizen Police Academy.

Citizen Police Academies (CPA) have long been conducted by various police departments throughout the area, state, and nation.  The objective is to educate citizens about the structure and activities of their local police department.  This isn’t a training academy per se.  However, it provides citizens with an in-depth, first hand look at police department operations.  Most importantly, the CPA serves as a bridge to build a more positive relationship between citizens and officers.

Our CPA program will meet each Thursday evening for two hours beginning January 6th until graduation on March 3rd.  Instructors come from police department ranks. Topics include police department organization and structure, state and local requirements for becoming a police officer, police officer training requirements, laws, arrest procedures, court proceedings, emergency communications, and more.. Additionally, there will be hands-on workshops in crime scene searches, traffic stops, firearms safety, and operation of various police equipment.  After graduation, CPA members will be given the opportunity to ride with a patrol officer for a shift.  Graduates will  also have the opportunity to participate as citizen representatives of the police department in community events.

Enrollment is open to any Hollywood Park resident who is at least 21 years of age.  Applicants must not have been convicted of any felony, must not be on probation or parole, and must agree to a criminal records check.  Applications are available at the police department, from individual officers, and on the Town of Hollywood Park web site (www.hollywoodpark-tx.gov).  For additional information, call 494-3575, extension 226 or 227.   Enrollment is limited.
